Guru of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Introduction

Guru Nanak Dev Ji is considered the founder of Sikh faith. He was the first Guru in Sikh religion. Guru Nanak Dev ji emphasised the importance of a Guru and this is evident in his speech. The question that has remained a mystery is, "Who was the Guru of Guru Nanak Dev Ji?". Guru Nanak Dev ji also acquired a Guru as he eulogises his Guru in his speech. A deeper look into Shri Guru Granth Sahib and other Holy Scriptures such as Pran Sangli and Janam Sakhi give ample information about Guru Nanak Dev ji's guru. It makes clear that Guru of Guru Nanak Dev ji was Kabir Sahib.

Guru Nanak Dev ji was born in 1469 CE in Talwandi, Punjab, currently in present day Pakistan. He was born in Hindu religion in Khatri caste. Nanak ji was employed as a store keeper in the local government. He had a wife named Sulakhani and two sons.

Kabir Sahib was present on earth from 1498 to 1518CE. As a result both Kabir Sahib and Guru Nanak Dev ji were contemporaries.

Guru Nanak's meeting with his Guru, God Kabir

Nanak ji used to take bath at the banks of river bein in Talwandi. One day he met God Kabir while he was getting ready to take a bath. After a brief discussion, Guru Nanak Dev ji jumped into river bein from where God Kabir took him to Sachkhand. He then spent three days in Sachkhand with God Kabir. On returning from Sachkhand, Nanak ji imparted the knowledge of his divine meeting with God to everyone via the means of "Bani" i.e. speech spoken by Nanak Dev ji, which was later on collected and bound as Guru Granth Sahib by the 5th Guru.

What was the primary message that Guru Nanak Dev ji gave?

All the banis (speech) of Guru Nanak ji spoke have three major themes.

  • Glory of Supreme God
  • Importance of a True Guru (Satguru) in one's life
  • Main aim of human life is to worship Supreme God in order to achieve moksha and reach Sachkhand

So the central message of Guru Nanak ji was to worship the Supreme God and acquire a True Guru.

Who was Guru of Guru Nanak?

Guru Nanak ji has spoken numerous speeches on the importance of finding a True Guru (a complete guru). He repeatedly says in his bani that finding and aquiring a True Guru (Satguru) is the most important step in one's life in order to reach sachkhand and thus achieve moksha.

It is therefore immanent that Guru Nanak had a Guru. There is no question that Guru Nanak ji did not have a guru. Now the question is that who was Guru Nanak ji's Guru?

Guru Nanak ji met Supreme God at the banks of river Bein in Sultanpur Lodhi who then took him to Sachkhand where Guru Nanak spent three days. The same Supreme God was the Guru of Guru Nanak.

It is a fact that Guru Nanak Dev ji acquired the Supreme God as his Guru. Current day sikhs (followers of Sikhism) refer to this god as 'Waheguru', 'Akal Purakh' or even 'Satguru'. However, Guru Granth Sahib and Janam Sakhi (Bhai Balewali) prove that the name of Supreme God is God Kabir. So Guru of Guru Nanak Dev ji was Supreme God Kabir.
