ਯਕ ਅਰਜ ਗੁਫਤਮ ਪੇਸਿ ਤੋ ਦਰ ਗੋਸ ਕੁਨ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥ ਹਕਾ ਕਬੀਰ ਕਰੀਮ ਤੂ ਬੇਐਬ ਪਰਵਦਗਾਰ ॥੧॥

੧. Yak arj guftam pes to dar, gosh kun Kartar.

I have a humble request at Your divine door—O Creator, please listen to it.

Haqaa Kabir Karim tu, bey-aib Parvardigar.

You are the True Kabir, the Compassionate One, the Flawless Sustainer, the Supreme God. ❶

ਦੁਨੀਆ ਮੁਕਾਮੇ ਫਾਨੀ ਤਹਕੀਕ ਦਿਲ ਦਾਨੀ ॥ ਮਮ ਸਰ ਮੂਇ ਅਜਰਾਈਲ ਗਿਰਫਤਹ ਦਿਲ ਹੇਚਿ ਨ ਦਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Duniya mukaame fani, tahqiq dil daani.

This world is a temporary abode; You alone truly understand the hearts.

Mam sar mui Azrail girfatah, dil hech na daani.

When the soul leaves the body, Azrael, the angel of death, seizes it mercilessly—and no one can help or understand the pain at that moment.

ਜਨ ਪਿਸਰ ਪਦਰ ਬਿਰਾਦਰਾਂ ਕਸ ਨੇਸ ਦਸਤੰਗੀਰ ॥ ਆਖਿਰ ਬਿਅਫਤਮ ਕਸ ਨ ਦਾਰਦ ਚੂੰ ਸਵਦ ਤਕਬੀਰ ॥੨॥

੨. Jan, pisar, padar, biraadaraan, kas naest dastangeer.

Neither son, nor father, nor brothers—no one stands by as a helper in that moment.

Aakhir biaftam, kas na daarad, choon savad takbir.

In the end, no action, no ritual, no effort remains useful—nothing helps, not even religious chants. ❷

ਸਬ ਰੋਜ ਗਸਤਮ ਦਰ ਹਵਾ ਕਰਦੇਮ ਬਦੀ ਖਿਆਲ ॥ ਗਾਹੇ ਨ ਨੇਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਮ ਮਮ ਈ‍ਂ​ ਚਿਨੀ ਅਹਵਾਲ ॥੩॥

੩. Sab roz gastam dar hawa, kardem badi khyaal.

Day and night, I kept wandering in bad thoughts, like the wind that never stops moving.

Gahe na neki kaar kardam, mam een chini ahwaal.

I never truly performed righteous deeds. Such has been my miserable condition. ❸

ਬਦਬਖਤ ਹਮ ਚੁ ਬਖੀਲ ਗਾਫਿਲ ਬੇਨਜਰ ਬੇਬਾਕ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੁਗੋਯਦ ਜਨੁ ਤੁਰਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਾਕਰਾਂ ਪਾ ਖਾਕ ॥੪॥੧॥

੪. Badbakht ham cho bakheel, gaafil, benazar, bebaak.

I, the unfortunate one, remained miserly, careless, spiritually blind, and without true fear of God.

Nanak bugoyad jan Tura, tere chaakran paa khaak.

Nanak says: O Supreme Kabir, by Your grace, even a lowly servant like me was saved by the dust of Your true devotees’ feet. ❹❶
