Gita 7.16

चतुर्विधाः, भजन्ते, माम्, जनाः, सुकृतिनः, अर्जुन,
आर्तः, जिज्ञासुः, अर्थार्थी, ज्ञानी,च,भरतर्षभ।।16।।


Gita 7.16

ChaturvidhaH, bhajante, mam’, janaaH, sukrtinH, Arjun,
AartH, jigyaasuH, arthaarthi, gyaani, ch, bharatrshabh ||16||

Translation: (Bharatrshabh Arjun) O the best of the Bharats, Arjun! (sukrtinH) who perform virtuous acts (arthaarthi) Artharthi – one who performs rituals through Ved mantras to attain wealth (aartH) Aart – one who performs rituals by Ved mantras for removal of crisis (jigyaasu) Jigyasu – one who with the desire to gain information regarding God by gaining knowledge, becoming knowledgeable on the basis of the Vedas, becomes a speaker (ch) and (gyaani) Gyaani, who has come to know that a human life is only for attaining God. Even God can be attained by doing worship of only one Almighty God with an undeviated mind; such (chaturvidhaH) of four kinds (janaaH) devout men (mam’) me (bhajante) worship / do bhajan. (16)

Gita 7.16: O the best of Bharats, Arjun! Those who perform virtuous acts – Artharthi (seeker of wealth) - one who performs rituals through Ved mantras to attain wealth, Aart (the distressed) - one who performs rituals by Ved mantras for removal of crisis, Jigyasu (inquisitive) - one who with the desire to gain information regarding God by gaining knowledge, becoming knowledgeable on the basis of the Vedas, becomes a speaker, and Gyani (learned) - who has come to know that a human life is only for attaining God; even God can be attained by doing worship of only one Almighty God with an undeviated mind; such four kinds of devout men worship me.

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 7 Verse 16 - Gist

Basically the knowledge giver of Bhagavad Gita is saying to Arjun in 7.16 that four types of people worship me which are as under.

  1. Artharthi (seeker of wealth) - one who performs rituals through Ved mantras to attain wealth.
  2. Aart (the distressed) - one who performs rituals by Ved mantras for removal of crisis.
  3. Jigyasu (inquisitive) - one who with the desire to gain information regarding God by gaining knowledge, become knowledgeable on the basis of the Vedas.
  4. Gyani (learned) - one who has come to know that a human life is only for attaining God.

In the next verse i.e Gita 7.17 the speaker of Gita clarifies that out of these 4, only the Gyani is dear to me.
